Alta Alternative: How Clad9 Compares

Alta is one of the most polished closet apps there is: fast to fill, kind to your photos, and on iPhone, Android and the web. It suggests outfits for the weather and helps you shop for what it thinks is missing. Clad9 plans from the clothes you already own, for the weather, the events on your calendar, and what's actually clean, and shows every look on you.

Why Clad9 Goes Further

Alta has earned its praise. Uploading fifty photos at once, scanning a rail by video and forwarding receipts make a closet quick to fill, and its photo cleanup turns a shirt on a bed into something that looks like a shop listing. Clad9 does that for every garment too, so if beautiful photos are what you're after, both apps deliver.

The difference is what happens each morning. Alta asks what you're dressing for. Clad9 already knows: it reads the client dinner on Thursday, the forecast where the dinner is, and the fact that your navy blazer went into the wash on Monday. Then it builds three looks from your own closet with all of that in mind, and lets you swap any single piece.

Clad9 also keeps to what you own. Alta mixes things to buy into its suggestions and earns when you buy them. Clad9's looks come only from your closet, and when you're tempted by something new, the question it helps you answer is whether that piece would earn its place.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Alta connect to my calendar?

Alta's store listing mentions your schedule, but its own help pages describe an occupation setting and typed prompts, and its Calendar is a log of outfits you've worn. We found no way to connect Google or Outlook. Clad9 connects to Google Calendar and dresses each upcoming event on its own.

How does Alta make money?

Alta charges nothing for the app. It told WWD that it earns a share when someone buys an item it suggests. Clad9 is paid by subscription, and its looks are built only from clothes you own.

Will Clad9 know what I've already worn this week?

Yes. Photograph what you wore and Clad9 logs each piece as worn. Washable pieces go to the laundry basket and aren't suggested again until you mark them clean, and pieces you wore recently are held back so the same shirt doesn't come round every other day.
